How to Instill the Adventure of Reading in Children?

Avid readers are formed with their parents. The time and the way that they dedicate to create the habit in their children make the difference. The main thing: not impose reading as an obligation. Today we propose a collection of mystery books for children from 9 to 11 years old at Fasthall.

Mystery books are often accompanied by an investigation, and that means that readers cannot look up from the pages. Children are not an exception. The mystery and adventure novels at Fasthall hook the reader because they make us follow an investigation and want to know the outcome of the mystery. The mystery book has become fashionable, both in children's literature and youth.

The horror stories, vampires, ghosts, cemeteries etc. are recurrent themes that get hooked on the youngest in their first year’s readers. The stories of mystery, the stories of terror, which come from the oral tradition and exist in all cultures to be narrated in a group, we are crazy. The dark scenarios, the spirits, the cemeteries, the haunted houses, the unsolved crimes, the Gothic aesthetics, the bats, the vampires etc. have an infinite power of attraction because we can be curious, intrigue and, in the end, the put us to the test in front of our own ghosts.

There are very positive values behind this type of books. Curiosity, kindness, teamwork, friendship, cunning, courage, effort. Qualities that appear strengthened, because the ultimate goal is not to frighten, but to show that it is possible to face fears and overcome them. It is a moment, too, in which children are already able to discern the fiction of reality, so introducing fantastic elements motivates them even more. It allows addressing issues such as death, evil, the conflict between good and evil in a natural and fun way.
